The historic farmstead of the Hale family of Coventry was the home of Capt. Nathan Hale (1755-1776), the "Martyr Spy" of the American Revolution, and his nine brothers and sisters grew up and worked on this farm.
The house (1776), outbuildings and stone walls as well as what remains of the original 400 acres of farm fields are important reminders of the way most Americans lived at the time of the nation's founding. Nathan Hale went "under cover" for General George Washington, was caught by the British on Long Island, and summarily hanged as a spy on 21 September 1776. Nathan was 21 years old.
Capt. Hale gave a speech before his execution, one line of which has been engraved on the hearts of many American Patriots: "My only regret is that I have but one life to lose for my country!"
